Sad news to report from Gordan Mitchell Gordan writes...

Recently, I was diagnosed with AAADD: Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests:
I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I spotted the mail on the hall table. I should go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay the car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is full. So, I put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. Since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I might as well pay the bills first.
I see my checkbook on the table, but there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk, where I find the bottle of juice that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the juice aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. But the juice is getting warm, and should be put in the refrigerator to keep it cold. Heading toward the kitchen with the juice, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye. They need to be watered. I set the juice down on the counter, and find my reading glasses, for which I've been searching all morning. I had better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water, and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. Tonight when we sit down to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it's on the kitchen table. I should put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So, I put the remote back down on the table, and get some towels to wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm bottle of juice sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. I'm trying to figure out why nothing got done today; it's quite baffling because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I know this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail. Do me a favor, will you? Forward this message to whoever you think might enjoy it, because I don't remember who I've already sent it to.

Gordan Mitchell writes... One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. He decided to send an angel down to Earth to check it out. So he called one of his angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time. When the angel returned, she told God, "Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and 5% are not." He thought for a moment and said, "Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion." So God called another angel and sent her to Earth for a time too. When the angel returned she went to God and said "Yes the Earth is in decline, 95% are misbehaving and 5% are being good." God was not pleased. So He decided to E-MAIL the 5% that were good because He wanted to encourage them and give them a little something to help them keep going. Do you know what that E-MAIL said?
OH, you did not get one either, huh?
Didn't think so!!

Is that enough for the archives? Or is it toooooooo much. All this between the ages of 12yrs and 15 yrs. Jerry Bush'56
Mike, If memory serves, Wasn't the Western Auto Store right near the Presbyterian Church where Oakland Ave. and Saginaw split? There was a large parking lot near there next to the Kroger store. And between western Auto and Simms was a very small Sears store (almost like a catalog store)bought some snowtires for my New '60 Pontiac Convertible and had them installed downstairs @ their garage out back. Also near Simms was the White Castle hamburger place. open 24 hours and what a way to sober up on 10cent hamburgers. Jerry Bush '56

OK, you have talked me into telling my first job. The first one was at Rottegers market on Voorhies. I worked there for a couple of summers. There was a butcher there named John I think (help me out here Phil) that made "City Chicken". Some kind of meat on a stick. It was great!! Another of my early jobs was flipping pizzas at the White Swan restuant on M-59 at Pontiac Lk Rd. We would make about 120 on a Friday and Saturday and about 90 to 100 on a Sunday. We ate our mistakes (which were many). For some reason I still really like pizza. There was a window at the drive in and people used to sit in their cars and watch us. The White Swans pizza was almost as good as Rocco's. Butch Trager

I think you're right about the store being Simms. My Mom worked there for years. I worked there part-time holidays during college. That store was great when I married and had my boys. Mom would go thru the merchandise when it came in and get clothes for the boys at cost. Boy did I miss that when they closed down.
My first job, other than babysitting, was summers while I was in college. Worked at Pontiac General Hospital (now known as North Oakland Medical Center) as a "bedmaker". Made beds after patients were discharged, passed water pitchers, and food trays. Now all this extra work is done by the nursing staff. I enjoyed working in the hospital setting. After discovering that teaching wasn't for me after college, I wound up back in hospitals doing billing.

I'm way too young to remember any of this firsthand, you understand, but nobody has mentioned Waites Department Store on the NE corner of Huron and Saginaw (I think), the Federals Dept. Store on the west side of Saginaw, or even the Courthouse on the corner. How about Osmun's Mens Store, where you also bought Tigers tickets ($3.00 for box seats, $2.00 for reserved). It was always strange to go to a game and see people you knew all around you, since they bought their tickets there, as well.
My first "real" job was at the Big Valu grocery store at the south end of the business district. It had been a Wrigley's, but got downgraded to their lower line as the area declined. By that time, a lot of the buildings were empty, such as the State and Orpheum Theaters--the Oakland Theater had burned down about that time. What had been the Lions Store next to (north of) the grocery store had become a series of sleazy family-owned furniture stores that held perpetual "goin-out-of-business" sales, and then re-opened with a different relative listed as the owner. Ah, the good ol' days!

My first real paying job was at Hinkleys 5 & 10 store. It was located where Harwoods Tuxedo is on Huron st. I was 12 years old. I don't think they even had work permits back then. I would go there each day after school and sweep the floors. I had to spread this red sawdust down then sweep it all up. It kept the dust down. I also had to wash the windows a couple times a week. Some of the side benifits was each month the store had to send the unsold Comic books back to the publisher. I had to take just the front cover off to be sent back and I could take home any comics I wanted. I would take one of each home. I also was alowed one piece of candy each day from the candy counter which was all bulk back then. I liked the ones covered in Chocolate with the white fillings. I did that for about a year before I started cadding. Phil tnkid '56 WTHS
My first job was washing dishes at The Hanger Grill it was located at the Pontiac Airport.
The Western auto was just North of the Sears store and I thought the Sears store was Big. It had an upstairs, main floor and the Basement as you pointed out with the auto section out back. The "White Tower" Burger place was next door. to the south. I remember being in there once when I guy came in ordered a glass of warm water then put ketsup in it to make tomatoe soup! Simms was just south of the White Tower. They were all on the east side of the street and Federals was built across from Simms. Years later the Western Auto moved up on Huron near Franklin by the funeral home and across the street from the XXX hamburger place. Phil '56
